Prof. V.N. Stathopoulos received his PhD in Chemistry and in the last 22 years has worked in both academic and private sector including Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, University of Ioannina and Ceramics and Refractories Company CERECO SA. (currently MIRTEC S.A.) as founding Manager of Environmental Department. Today is a Professor in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, head of Laboratory of Chemistry and Materials Technology. For the years 2018-2022 Prof Stathopoulos has been a Visiting Professor/Researcher in the University of Cyprus, Heterogeneous Catalysis Laboratory. He is the Vice Chair of the Research and Innovation Council of the Region of Central Greece (Sterea Ellada) since 2018 as well as Board Member and Secretary (2018) of Hellenic Ceramics Society.

He has a long experience in research and development project management and has successfully implemented both as partner and in some cases coordinator various European (H2020, FP7, FP6, STREP, RFCS etc), National (NSRF, Industrial Materials, etc) and private sector projects. He has participated in more than 20 research and development projects.

His research focuses on materials chemistry, catalysis and functional coatings and their application in environmental and energy technologies i.e. waste heat recovery, air and water depollution, thermal energy storage etc.

Prof Stathopoulos edited chapters of the Encyclopedia of Smart Materials (Elsevier). He has authored more than 90 scientific papers, 2 patent applications, 4 book chaptes and presented his research in more than 180 conferences.
